An 18-year-old youth was charged today with using a sword to hack the hand of another man in a jealous rage.
High school student Theav Y, of Banteay Meanchey province’s Poipet commune,
was arrested on Tuesday and charged with an intentional act of violence.
He faces up to five years in jail if convicted.
Poipet city communal police officer Captain Yong An said the victim was Khon Syche, 27, a construction worker who lived in Kbal Spean 1 village.
On Tuesday afternoon Mr Syche, who had been wooing the accused’s 16-year-old girlfriend, followed her and talked to her as she walked.
Mr Y, who lived in the same village, saw them and became very angry.
He took a sharp sword and hacked at the victim, trying to kill him. The victim suffered serious injuries.
“He was jealous over the girlfriend,” Mr An said.
“He was angry at the victim for wooing her. He then took the sword and hacked the victim.
“The victim raised his left hand to protect himself. The sword caused serious damage to his hand,” he said.
The accused fled but local police arrested him later in the village.
The victim was helped by police. He was still being treated in the provincial referral hospital last night.
