Since 2009, the Cambodia International Film Festival has brought new insights to Cambodians, including students and movie fans, as well as movie stars and filmmakers themselves. Over these nine years, the size of the audience has increased remarkably and the festival has grown into a positive platform for supporting improvement of the film industry, quantitatively and qualitatively.

At a press conference at the Bophana Centre on February 22, it was announced that the Eighth Cambodia International Film Festival will be held on March 5-11. Expected to draw participants from various sectors and visual media, this year’s event will present 130 films from 41 countries and bring more than 70 filmmakers from 16 countries together in Phnom Penh. It will feature more than 160 screenings and events at 10 venues in the capital.

Elodie Yung, a successful French-Cambodian actress who has starred in Hollywood movies and the Marvel series “Daredevil”, will act as patron of the Eighth CIFF, said Cedric Eloy of the Cambodian Film Commission.

He also introduced Neang Sovathana, better known as DJ Nana, a popular Cambodian radio entertainer and MC, who will serve as an ambassador for the CIFF this year.

“I am a big fan of movies. But one thing that I think is unfair is the way that film stars, who are famous and earn a lot of money, look down on those who help them achieve fame, because Cambodians always value those who appear on screen. I think stars should take part in promoting those who helped them behind the scenes. I have also created a platform on Facebook calling for people to support the CIFF as well,” said DJ Nana.

Local and international movies will be highlighted and screened at the festival, and workshops will be held.
