The ruling Cambodian People’s Party, in a landslide victory, will occupy all 58 Senate seats that were up for election; it will subsequently dominate the Senate.  Three minor parties had put up candidates for the available seats, as we reported on Feb. 25 – they went out empty-handed.

The election, which was monitored by various associations and NGOs, was carried out in a smooth, calm, and fair manner.

Funcinpec issued a statement that reads, in part: “the … party announces that it … accepts the preliminary results of the Senate election.”  The Cambodian Youth Party has also acknowledged the results.

In days gone by, the former oppositional party (Funcinpec) more or less regularly opposed election results and called on the US and other foreign countries to disregard them.

62 Senate seats were to be filled in toto, 58 by the votes of commune councilors and members of parliament; and of the remaining four, two Senators are to be appointed by the King and two by the National Assembly.
