About 65,000 marijuana plants were uprooted and burned by military police in Takeo province yesterday.

Military police discovered the marijuana plantation in Kirivong district after villagers tipped off local authorities.

No arrests were made during the operation.

Colonel Nget Chanthy, deputy commander of the provincial military police, said the marijuana plants were found in a remote, mountainous area. Col Chanthy added that 55 officers were dispatched to search an area known for marijuana farming and destroyed the plants on the scene.

“Our officers cooperated with local authorities to uncover about 65,000 marijuana plants located in a remote part of Preah Bat Choan Chum commune,” Col Chanthy said.

“Military police uprooted the plants and burned them on site.”

The farm was located on Phnom Bayang mountain, a few kilometres away from the nearest village,

“The plants were being grown on top of the mountain, which is state land,” Col Chanthy noted. He said authorities were investigating further to find and arrest the owners of the plantation.

Early this year, more than 21,000 marijuana plants were seized and burned by police in Kirivong district.

Last year, the government’s anti-drug campaign resulted in the arrest of 17,747 people for various drug offences and the seizure of more than 173 kilograms of illicit substances.

Authorities also confiscated around 113 kilograms of marijuana, in addition to 275,815 marijuana plants that were burned.
