The area near Phnom Penh’s iconic Olympic Stadium has undergone a transformation in the past two years.

A construction boom near the popular sporting venue has turned what was once a low-rise neighbourhood into an area dotted with high-rise buildings, which tower over the football field and running track below.

A combination of office blocks, condominiums and shopping centres have started to spring up in the area, dwarfing the older and more traditional shophouses and residences nearby.

In fact, high-rises are popping up all over a city that was once admired for its classic French colonial houses and government ministries.

Once all the building work is finished, the area around the Olympic Stadium will become a major centre for thousands who will work in the offices, live in the condos or shop in the malls there.

Long-time residents welcome the development, but are dreading the inevitable traffic jams.
