Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday called on people to drive carefully over the coming Chinese New Year in order to avoid fatal traffic accidents.
Mr Hun Sen was awarding certificates to more than 4,000 graduates at the Western University when he made the plea during his speech.
“During the Chinese New Year, I want to appeal to everyone to be careful while driving, because we do not want any fatal traffic accidents,” he said. “Please, do not let accident happen.”
Mr Hun Sen noted that more and more people were celebrating the Chinese New Year in Cambodia every year, and that many leave the capital to drive to their home provinces for celebrations that begin this week.
Last year there were 38 traffic accidents during Chinese New Year that resulted in 22 deaths and injuries to 60 people, including 38 who were seriously injured.
The main causes of the accidents were speeding, drunk driving and dangerous overtaking.
