A convict who fled from custody was yesterday sentenced to an additional 18 months in prison on top of his previous two-year jail term for theft.

The man fled from authorities while he was allowed out of the prison to conduct labour duty in April 2017.

Top Chhunheng, judge of Phnom Penh Municipal Court, identified the convict as Ban Krak, 34, previously detained at JP prison in Phnom Penh.

He was caught on May 1, 2017, when he only had two months of his original sentence left to serve.

“The court decided to sentence him to 18 months in jail in addition to his previous sentence,” judge Chhunheng said.

During his trial, Mr Krak admitted his mistakes.

“The reason why I escaped from the prison was because I was homesick and missing my family,” he told the court.

“So when I was allowed to come out of the prison cell, there was a good opportunity and I fled.”
