Cambodia’s medal-winning fencers arrived home yesterday morning, bringing along silverware from their exploits at the recently concluded 2018 SEAFF Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships.
Speaking with reporters, Sok Ang, the secretary-general of the Cambodian Fencing Federation, said he was proud to be able to show year on year improvement.
“Our target is to increase our medal tally every year. Last year, we won two bronze medals and this year we’ve won more, so we are optimistic, he said.
Cambodia’s small contingent of 13 garnered a silver and two bronze medals. The medal tally was topped by Singapore with 10 gold, 3 silver and 9 bronze medals. Vietnam followed in second with three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.
Mr Ang added that the experience in Malaysia would help the team to prepare for impending international tournaments like the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Cambodia’s fencers train daily at Phnom Penh’s Olympic Stadium and at HYSA Sport Club. As an Olympic sport, fencing also receives recognition and funding from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the NOCC.
