Three Chinese nationals were arrested and charged yesterday by Phnom Penh Municipal Court for beating another Chinese man over borrowed money.

The attack took place on Friday night at a Chinese construction company in Boeng Kak village in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district.

Sok Savuth, deputy chief of Daun Penh district police, identified the three suspects as Chen Sheng, 44, a construction manager, as well as Zhang Zhong Wen and Zha Chinhuan, both 47 and construction engineers.

They were charged with “intentional acts of violence” and sent to Prey Sar prison pending their trial.

Mr Savuth said the victim was Zhang Hong, another construction engineer from the same company.

He added that before the attack took place, the three suspects and the victim argued over a debt.

Mr Zhang had borrowed $2,000 from the suspects and they demanded the money back.

“They severely beat the victim, causing injuries, to force him to return the cash, but the victim simply did not have the money,” Mr Savuth said.

After the beating, Mr Zhang sought help from local police, who promptly arrested the trio.
