A ruling CPP lawmaker yesterday said that the government supports the summit held between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore, noting it is a good sign for complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un issued a joint statement after their meeting in which the former committed to provide security guarantees for its old enemy and the latter reaffirmed his commitment to complete denuclearisation.

Ruling CPP lawmaker Chheang Vun told the press after a meeting of the National Assembly’s Permanent Committee that the summit will ease Korean peninsula tensions.

“What is also important for Cambodia is that we think this summit is a good thing for our own development,” he said. “Cambodia will benefit from the summit.”

“I hope the summit can provide a lot of benefits to the world and the region,” he added. “Peace is important because it allows people’s livelihoods to grow and be secure.”

Mr Vun noted that if peace can be achieved, then economic sanctions against North Korea can also be dropped.

North Korea and the US were on opposite sides in the 1950-53 Korean War and are technically still at war, as the conflict, in which millions of people died, was concluded only with a truce.
