Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Friday charged a 50-year-old father with raping his nine-year-old daughter.
The assault took place on Tuesday at their home in Phnom Penh’s Chbar Ampov district.
District deputy police chief Lieutenant Colonel Mao Soeuth said the father, a construction worker, was charged with rape with aggravating circumstances and faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted.
Lt Col Soeuth added that the investigating judge jailed the accused following the charge pending his trial.
Lt Col Soeuth said the accused was arrested the day after the assault following a complaint filed with local police by his wife.
Soy Chamroeun, a second lieutenant with Prek Eng commune police, said an investigation revealed that on Tuesday afternoon the accused returned home after drinking rice wine in the village.
When the accused got home, his wife had gone out to collect lotus fruit and roots to sell. The daughter was alone at home.
“He was drunk. He grabbed his daughter and raped her in the house,” Lt Chamroeun said. “After the rape, he threatened to kill her and the mother if she told her mother or anyone else.”
The daughter was then too frightened to tell her mother about the rape, despite suffering injuries to her genitals, Lt Chamroeun said.
However, a day later she told her mother what had happened after her father left the home for work. The mother became very angry with her husband and quickly filed a complaint with police. The accused was the arrested the same day, Lt Chamroeun said.
Lt Chamroeun added that the accused admitted his guilt when questioned by police.
He confessed that before his arrest, he had abused his daughter three times by touching her genitals and breasts while his wife was not at home.
