Tomorrow, June 12, the Philippines – one of Cambodia’s economic and tourism partners – will be celebrating the 120th anniversary of the declaration of its independence from Spanish colonisation. To mark this special day for the Southeast Asian country, the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh gathered the Filipino expatriates in Cambodia yesterday.

Dozens of Filipinos sang the country’s national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, as the Philippine flag was raised. Everyone was also treated with an outstanding performance from Acts Manila – who flew all the way from the Philippine capital – and packs of all-time favourite Filipino breakfast.

Philippine Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E Christopher Montero, said that Filipinos working in foreign lands should never forget to look back to their home country and be proud of how far it has come since gaining its independence in 1898. Mr Montero also expressed his gratitude to all Filipino expatriates in Cambodia who continue to strive for the betterment not just of their individual families, but of the whole nation as well.
