The Khmer National United Party (KNUP) held its extraordinary congress to elect a new president, and Nhek Bun Chhay was voted in.
He is the party’s founder and served as its head up until his arrest in August 2017 over a 2007 Kampong Speu drug-related case. Phnom Penh Municipal Court has let him out on bail.
After having his presidency approved by the congress (on Saturday, June 9) Mr Bun Chhay laid out party policies for its candidacy in the upcoming election. He plans to the provinces of Kandal, Kampong Cham and Banteay Meanchey rally supporters.
Soeung Kiry held the KNUP presidency during Mr Bun Chhay’s hiatus and was promoted as president of party’s supreme council.
