Health Minister Mam Bun Heng has appealed to people to take precautions in order to avoid dengue fever during the rainy season.

“Please, everyone be careful and take care of your children from dengue fever during the rainy season,” he said on Wednesday while visiting patients at Batheay referral hospital in Kampong Cham province.

“If they get it, it could potentially affect their lives if not treated on time,” he noted.

Mr Bun Heng also gave some recommendations to people in order to avoid the illness.

He said people should practice good hygiene while preparing and eating food, especially during the rainy season.

“In order to avoid dengue fever, everyone has to clean the house, both inside and outside, do not keep water around that could have larvae, and sleep under a mosquito net,” he added.

Mr Bun Heng also said that if anyone suspects they have the illness, they should immediately go to the nearest health clinic to get treated.

Meanwhile, the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control has introduced measures to prevent an outbreak of dengue fever in 2018 after the Health Ministry warned earlier this year that dengue fever cases could spike.

The CNM has prepared more than 350 tonnes of the larvicide BTI and more than 5,690 litres of insecticide throughout the country.

The CNM also issued guidelines to rid homes of mosquitoes and larvae, including making sure there is nothing around your house that can hold water such as cans, old tires and jars, and ensuring your house has enough light so mosquitoes cannot hide.

It also said that the homeowners should cooperate with health officials to kill mosquitoes and larvae.

There were 6,372 cases of dengue fever in Cambodia in 2017. In 2016, there were 12,843 cases, with 18 deaths.

Dengue fever outbreaks usually occur every five to six years.
