Two police officers in Kampong Cham province have been temporarily suspended for posting a picture of their colleagues sleeping during an event with Prime Minister Hun Sen last week.
According to a letter obtained yesterday and signed by provincial chief of police Em Kosal, Colonel Im Seangdy and Colonel Keng Sreng took the photo and posted it online, leading to their suspension.
“I order Major Chiv Sengros, deputy chief of the anti-drugs office, to become acting bureau chief, replacing Colonel Im Seangdy,” the letter said.
The letter added that You Pirun, Camkar Loeu district deputy police chief, is to become acting district police chief to replace Colonel Kheng Sreng.
Mr Kosal declined to comment yesterday when reached by phone.
Mr Sreng said that he admitted his role in capturing the photograph but added that he did not mean to intentionally damage the honour of the sleeping officers.
“I took the picture for fun and I sent it through Whatsapp. I didn’t post it on social media,” Mr Sreng said. “It was my mistake and I received administrative punishment for it.”
San Chey, executive director of the Affiliated Network for Social Accountability, said that he doubted that only two officers were involved.
“I think they should have been advised, not [suspended],” Mr Chey added, noting that the sleeping police officers also made a mistake.
