Police in Siem Reap and Battambang provinces have collaborated to arrest a man who kidnapped his own stepdaughter in order to demand a ransom of $500 from her mother.
Phoeng Chendareth, deputy Siem Reap police chief in charge of the serious crimes bureau, said that the suspect was arrested in Siem Reap on Wednesday, when the nine-year-old victim was also rescued.
“We are going to send him to Battambang police,” he said. “We arrested the suspect along and rescued the girl in Siem Reap province,”
The suspect was identified as Vorn Toek, 34, who held his stepdaughter captive for several days at a guesthouse in Siem Reap.
Cheth Vanny, deputy provincial police chief with the serious crimes bureau, said that the suspect is a migrant worker in Thailand and went to visit family in Battambang, convincing the girl’s mother to let him take her on a trip.
