Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday has reiterated that he rules the country for 10 more years to eliminate the treasonous group who attempted to topple the government through a colour revolution.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony in Phnom Penh on Tuesday, Mr Hun Sen said that he stays on as the prime minister for two more mandates to maintain the country’s peace and development.
“I cannot allow somebody to destroy Cambodia. At the beginning, I wanted to relax some days but when the treasonous group has emerged, I decided to extend my office to 10 more years,” he said.
The CNRP was dissolved by the Supreme Court in November after its leader Kem Sokha was arrested on treason charge and accused of conspiring with the US to topple the government through a colour revolution.
Mr Hun Sen said that he remains in office because he wanted to graduate Cambodia to an upper-middle income country.
“Now I am not too old. Because of my goal, I stay on as the prime minister until 2028 and I want to succeed in upgrading Cambodia to an upper middle-income country,” Mr Hun Sen said.
Mr Hun Sen first took office on January 14, 1985, becoming the world’s youngest prime minister at 32 years of age. He was elected by the National Assembly after having served as foreign minister.
