Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court yesterday charged two men over the grisly murder of a 37-year-old man and the theft of his motorbike.
The murder took place on the night of May 25 at an area known for drug-use in Kon Khla village in the province’s Serey Sorphoan city. Villagers found the naked body of Phoeun Simoeun the next morning.
Brigadier General Sith Lah, deputy chief of Banteay Meanchey provincial police, said the two accused were Lonh Sokea, 32, and Srun Sos, 37. They lived in Serey Sorphoan city.
Both had been arrested on Saturday and accused of premeditated murder, which carries a life sentence. They have been sent to prison to await their trial.
Brig Gen Lah added that another two suspects involved in the crime, which was fuelled by sex and theft, remain at large. He noted that they have been charged in absentia and a warrant for their arrests has been issued.
Brig Gen Lah said the arrested pair had confessed while being questioned at the police station.
They said that on the night of murder they and their two friends had persuaded Mr Simoeun to come drink at a beer garden in Serey Sorphoan city. They drank there until late at night.
He said that after the drinks, they persuaded the victim to smoke drugs at the area known for its drug-use in Kampong Svay commune’s in Kon Khla village.
The victim drove his motorbike and brought Mr Sokea and Mr Sos. The other two suspects drove their own motorbike.
After arriving at the secluded place, they stopped the motorbikes. Mr Sos then started having oral sex with the victim.
“While the victim was having oral sex with Srun Soh, Lonh Sokea, who stood nearby, took an empty beer bottle and beat the victim on the head, causing him to lose consciousness,” Brig Gen Lah said. “Lonh Sokea then took the broken bottle and hacked the victim’s face while the others took pieces of rock and smashed the victim’s head, killing him on the spot.”
He said that after killing the victim, they stole his motorbike and fled.
The motorbike was taken by the two suspects who remain at large and has not yet been recovered, he noted, adding that police are hunting them to bring them to justice.
Sath Savuth, deputy chief of Serey Sorphoan city police, said Mr Simoeun was a cosmetics vendor and lived in O’Ambel commune in Serey Sorphoan city.
