The coveted trophy of the Bayon Challenge is ready for this year’s champion team.

PHNOM PENH, (Khmer Times) — This weekend sees the return of the annual sporting showpiece, the Bayon Challenge Cup, which will be held for the thirteenth time. The event will see five sides comprising teams of 11 players, with the current title-holders, the Bayon Wanderers FC, ready to defend their title.

The inaugural Bayon Challenge was conceived by French expatriates playing for Hanuman FC in 1996 and has since become an annual fixture. It is a popular event, drawing competitors from both inside and outside of Cambodia in a spirit of friendship and solidarity.

The Bayon Wanderers FC will be hoping to defend the crown they gained after narrowly defeating their Vietnamese opponents, the Saigon Hotshots, by one goal to nil in last year’s tense final.

The Saturday games will be held at the 3G Field with Phnom Penh’s Old Stadium hosting the Final knockout fixtures on Sunday.
