An Italian tourist was arrested early yesterday morning for attempting to break into an ABA bank machine in Daun Penh district after it failed to disperse his requested cash.
Captain Long Vichetr, a Daun Penh district police officer, identified the suspect as Patella Christian, 40, an Italian tourist now accused by police of intentional property damage. He faces six months to two years behind bars if convicted.
Capt Vichetr said that at about 4.45am yesterday morning, the suspect went to withdraw money from the bank machine on street 172 in Phsar Thmey III commune.
Capt Vichetr said the suspect became enraged when the bank machine failed to operate properly and began punching it, breaking several parts.
“He was angry at the machine for not dispersing his requested money,” he said “He then punched the machine and caused different parts to break.”
He said that after the incident, the suspect fled but was later arrested by local police.
Lieutenant Colonel Kaul Yi, Daun Penh district deputy police chief, said the suspect is still being detained for questioning at the district police station.
He added that the suspect will be sent to Phnom Penh Municipal Court today.
