Police in Banteay Meanchey province are hunting a man who raped a fellow gay man and murdered him by smashing his head with rocks last weekend.
The murder took place on Saturday at a drug-using area in Banteay Meanchey province’s Serey Sorphoan city. Villagers found the naked body of the 37-year-old man on Monday morning.
Major Sath Savuth, deputy chief of the city police, identified the victim as Phoeun Simoeun, a cosmetics vendor who lived in the city’s O’Ambel commune.
Mr Savuth said that Mr Simoeun’s family said the victim preferred to have sex with men. He left his home on his expensive motorbike on Saturday night.
Police believe that before the murder, the victim was persuaded by the suspect, who also preferred to have sex with men, to visit a quiet place in Kampong Svay commune. The victim drove the suspect there, police said.
When they arrived, the suspect caught hold of the victim and raped him, police said.
The suspect then killed the victim by hitting him on the head with rocks. Mr Simoeun died on the spot. The killer stole his motorbike and other property and fled.
Mr Savuth said an examination of the body had shown that the victim was raped with force by the killer.
“The victim was naked,” he said. “Two big pieces of rocks were left at the scene with spots of blood on them.”
Provincial police chief Major General Ath Khem said police had not yet identified the killer.
“Police are working hard to arrest the suspect and bring him to justice,” he said.
