A 61-year-old businessman was killed in front of his home and workshop on Wednesday and the gunman is still at large, police in Kampong Chhnang province said yesterday.
The incident took place at about 8pm at a handicraft workshop doubling as a home in Kampong Chhnang province’s Toek Phos district.
Major Duon Seng, deputy chief of Toek Phos district police, identified the victim as Bin Hoeun, 61.
According to a police report, the victim was shot as he was standing near a truck in front of his home in Trapaing Prey village.
An unidentified gunman in military trousers was seen by witnesses shooting the victim three times with an assault rifle before fleeing the scene.
“The initial shot hit the victim in the shoulder and the victim tried to hide under the truck that was parked in front of his workshop,” Maj Seng said. “Then two more shots were fired, hitting the victim in the stomach.”
“After shooting the victim, the gunman fled the scene on his motorbike,” he added.
Maj Seng said that upon hearing the shots, the victim’s family and neighbours went to see what had taken place only to find the victim bleeding out beneath the truck.
He said that local police were then contacted to intervene.
Major Brak Vuthy, provincail polce chief, suspects that the murder was motivated by resentment between the victim and the gunman.
“This case was due to rancour between the victim and the suspect,” Maj Vuthy said. “But we don’t know what the argument was about.” He said that police are now searching for the suspect.
