Phnom Penh military police yesterday sent four people involved in the distribution and sale of sex toys on social media to court for further questioning while revealing a possible lead that could bring the importer to police custody.

Military police authorities said that on Thursday last week, authorities raided a location after the officers discovered that the house located in Meanchey district was used to store sexually explicit products such as dildos, pornographic DVDs and sexual performance enhancing drugs.

Initially, five people were arrested, including one woman who acted as a direct advertiser. The four were sent to court while one suspect was released due to lack of involvement.

Or Kimsan, assistant to the Phnom Penh military police commander, said that the four suspects were sent to court over the distribution of sexually explicit materials.

“We sent four of them to court, while a man was released following a decision by the prosecutor,” he said. “He wasn’t involved, he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

If convicted, each suspect could be jailed for up to five years with fines up to about $2,500.

Mr Kimsan said that in addition to the raid, military police will continue to search for the importer of the sex products.

“Our military police officers will continue to search for the cause of all this because there are still dealers who imported the products,” he said.

Following the arrests, Phnom Penh military police confiscated more than 100 sex toys including 65 dildos, 53 porn DVDs, and sexual performance drugs. The authorities suspect the products were brought from Thailand and the authorities are searching for the main perpetrator.

The raid came after complaints were filed by people who viewed the advert.

Rath Sreang, Phnom Penh military police commander, said that sexually explicit products are considered a violation of the Khmer culture, customs and laws, while adding that it could lead some people to commit rape.
