Police in Kampong Cham’s Chamkar Loeu district have arrested a father who allegedly tried to rape his six-year-old daughter at his home after getting drunk on Saturday.
Police said the arrest followed a complaint from the girl’s aunt, who was living nearby.
Chamkar Andaung commune police chief Nhem Ol said that the incident happened on Saturday night. The aunt then reported it to police.
“The victim’s aunt complained after she was told of the crime,” Mr Ol said. “After receiving the complaint, we went to the scene and arrested him right away at about 9.20pm and sent him immediately to the district police.”
Mr Ol declined to comment further saying that he still had scant information from the suspect.
Ol Sokhom, Chamkar Loeu deputy district police chief, said that the district sent the suspect to the provincial police shortly after his arrest to have him prosecuted because police feared he might take his own life.
“We have to focus on him possibly committing suicide because we could see that when he recovered from his drunkenness, he seemed to regret what he had done,” Mr Sokhom said. “It’s hard to control; people who commit a crime might think of suicide.”
“And right now, we are still investigating to get more information about the crime,” he added. “We sent the suspect to the provincial police on Sunday. According to his confession, he was a serious drinker.”
“He has already arrived at the court for prosecution,” he added.
However, provincial court spokesman Hout Vuthy denied yesterday that the suspect had been sent to the court.
“We haven’t received him yet. He is still with the provincial police. However, according to his crime, he is likely facing an attempted rape charge,” he said.
A provincial police report said the 37-year-old father got drunk and went to sleep near his daughter at the aunt’s home.
The aunt found out about the rape attempt when the girl shouted out for help.
