Police in Kandal’s Ang Snuol district have arrested a suspect who posed as a fortune teller and tried to rape a mentally ill woman.
Nov Vannara, 43, had been asked by the victim’s parents to give a water blessing to the victim in Bek Chan commune on Saturday.
Phach Phalla, chief of the district police’s criminal section, said Mr Vannara confessed to the crime.
“We went to arrest the suspect after receiving a complaint from the victim’s parents who were at the scene,” he said. “When we questioned him, he confessed that he attempted to rape the victim who is mentally unfit and has a speech disability.”
Mr Phalla added that after questioning, the suspect was sent to the provincial police for further interrogation.
An officer with the provincial police, who declined to be named, said that the suspect was being held at the serious crime bureau for questioning and referred further questions to bureau chief Roeun Nara.
Mr Nara could not be reached for comment.
Provincial police chief Eav Chamroeun wrote on Facebook that the suspect was a motor taxi driver from Kampong Speu province who dressed as a fortuneteller and came to give a water blessing at the victim’s house.
He gave her a water blessing and demanded to be alone in a closed-door room with the victim, 22. He then took off her wet clothes and tried to rape her, Mr Chamroeun said.
The parents were suspicious and looked through a gap below the door. They saw him try to rape her, so they shouted to the suspect to open the door.
The parents then filed a complaint with the police to arrest him, Mr Chamroeun added.
