Three people were killed and three others were seriously injured when a taxi tyre blew out while the vehicle was speeding, leading to a rollover in Stung Treng province on Saturday.
The accident occurred in Thalaborivat district on the National Road 9. Pol Kimhang, deputy district police chief in charge of traffic, confirmed the death and injury toll.
“The traffic accident happened at 11.30am. Three people, including one woman, were killed and another three were seriously injured,” he said. “One person was slightly injured. There were 12 people in the taxi. The others were not injured at all even though the car was seriously damaged.”
“The driver was probably not injured because he was able to escape and remains at large,” he added. “The car burst a rear tyre and turned over. The Toyota Sienna taxi was on its way from Ratanakkiri province to Stung Treng province.”
Mr Kimhang added that police are looking for the driver.
A report to the provincial traffic accidents bureau identified those who died as Phorn Phum, 53, Veu Viech, 38, and Long Hieng, 44. It said that in addition to the tyre blowout, the taxi was travelling at a high speed.
Mr Kimhang said the bodies had been handed over to the families for their funerals.
Two of those injured were sent to the provincial referral hospital and the other was sent to a military hospital.
