Police in Prey Veng province’s Ba Phnom district yesterday arrested a man accused of shooting a district police officer on Thursday, resulting in the cop’s hospitalisation.
Pov Chivi, provincial deputy police chief in charge of the serious crimes bureau, said that the suspect was arrested yesterday and remains in the custody of district police.
“We already arrested one suspect in the shooting, and I already coordinated with the prosecutor and we are preparing documents for the court,” he said.
“It is likely that we will send him to the court tomorrow [Monday] or after tomorrow.”
“Right now, he is being detained for questioning at the district police office,” he added.
Provincial police chief Sreng Chea could not be reached for comment. District and commune police chiefs declined to comment.
According to local media, the 37-year-old victim was sitting alone playing with his phone on his motorbike on Thursday night in Raung Damrey commune when the suspect drove by and shot him once in the shoulder.
Mr Chivi said that the suspect, Sou Seith, was motivated by revenge, but would not detail the history between the two men.
“The motive behind the shooting is revenge,” he said. “Revenge for some problems that we should not talk about right now.” Mr Chivi noted that the suspect has been jailed in the past.
“I can just tell you that the suspect and victim are not really friends at all,” he said. “According to our identification records, the suspect is a former prisoner and was just released from prison a month ago.”
“We don’t have much information from the victim, who is being treated at the hospital,” he added.
“His condition is not yet better, but we can say that he will make a recovery. He was shot one time.”
