Police in Mondulkiri province’s Sen Monorom city yesterday arrested a man who dumped the body of his unconscious girlfriend in the trash after assuming that he had strangled her dead during a breakup.
Kan Penh, chief of Sen Monorom city police, said that the suspect, Chhom Davith, 26, confessed to police that he attempted to murder his girlfriend Nhara Sreyneang, 23, while fighting with her over a breakup in Sokhadom commune.
“The suspect called his girlfriend to have a talk near his house about breaking up with her,” he said. “Because they did not want neighbours to hear, he drove her to the valley of Dos Kramom mountain at around 10pm on Sunday.”
“We don’t know cleary what they discussed. However, according to the suspect’s confession, he asked the girl to break up, but the girl did not agree and she cried a lot and laid on the ground,” he added.
Mr Penh said that the suspect wanted to break up with his girlfriend because he believed she had another boyfriend.
“Because the girl did not agree and did not go home, he took the chance to strangle her with a rope until she was unconscious,” he said. “He then thought she was dead and dumped her body in a nearby trash site.”
Mr Penh said that the suspect then returned home to his sister’s house. Meanwhile, Ms Sreyneang regained consciousness hours later.
Mr Penh said she awoke covered in dirt and immediately went to the commune police station to request that authorities arrest her boyfriend.Police later arrested the suspect at his sister’s home, he said.
Mr Penh added that the suspect was then transferred to the provincial police, where officers with the serious crime department questioned him.
Bo Sovann, chief of the serious crime department, could not be reached for comment.
An officer with the department confirmed that the suspect remains in police custody.
