After teasing an estimated 45-million strong fanbase with weeks of build-up, Season 4 of Epic Games’ blockbuster Fortnite went live earlier this week, with updates to their wildly popular Battle Royale making waves online.

As many anticipated, the update comes following the aftermath of an enormous comet crash, which landed in the middle of the game’s map destroying Dusty Depot, the games’ military facility. Having destroyed the area, all that remains of Dusty Depot is a large crater – the location now renamed Dusty Divot.

The comet has devastated the map and as a result gameplay is a different animal to season 3. Newly formed crater sites offer glowing rocks that can reduce player’s gravity which could be both highly effective or a handicap depending on the situation.

Since its September 2017 launch on Microsoft Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, the game’s free-to-play business model has steadily helped it pick up steam and is now firmly established at the vanguard of the online multiplayer universe. Recent estimates suggest the game has more than 45 million players.

Fortnite Battle Royale, to give it its full name, features up to 100 players, alone or in small squads, attempting to be the last player alive by killing other players or evading them. Players must stay within a constantly shrinking safe zone to prevent taking lethal damage from being outside it.

They must scavenge for weapons and armour to gain the upper hand on their opponents and adds the construction element from the original Fortnite, where players can break down most objects in the game world to gain resources they can use to build fortifications as part of their strategy.

Epic announced the iOS release of Fortnite on its Twitter feed earlier last month, meaning it is also available to anyone with an iPhone SE, 6S, 7, 8 and X, and with the iPad Mini 4, Air 2, 2017 and Pro models. An Android version is currently in development. It was released in September 2017 on Microsoft Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.

It had previously been restricted to invitees of its beta program but the game is now available on the App Store.
