Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged a 34-year-old Vietnamese national over the rape of a 12-year-old girl, whom he lured using free ice cream.
Noun Chantha, a Chbar Ampov district police officer, identified the accused as Nguyen Cheath, an ice cream vendor who was charged with rape with aggravating circumstances.
Mr Chantha said that early this month, the accused, who sold ice cream in front of Chbar Ampov Primary School, often spoke with the girl as he sold her ice cream.
He said the accused gained the girl’s trust by often giving her ice cream free of charge.
Mr Chantha noted that on April 11, 12, and 13, the accused persuaded the girl to join him at a quiet place to eat ice cream inside the Chbar Ampov Pagoda, where he then raped her.
“He persuaded the victim to eat his ice cream free of charge,” he said. “He then raped her at the pagoda on three separate occasions.”
“After the rape, he always paid her about $1.25 each time in exchange for not telling her parents about having sex,” he added.
Mr Chantha said that on Monday evening, the accused again brought the victim to the same place with free ice cream where he planned to rape her.
However, the victim’s mother arrived at the pagoda and caught the accused trying to have sex with her daughter.
The mother then notified police, leading to the arrest of the accused on Tuesday.
