Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged the chief of a tong tin, or community savings group, with breach of trust and fraud for making off with $20,000 from the group of 30 investors.
Ly Sothy, an officer with the Ministry of Interior’s penal police unit, identified the suspect as Chan Thoeun, 35, the head of a tong tin saving group at Chom Chao Market.
“She has been sent by the court’s investigative judge to prison as further investigation is carried out,” Mr Sothy said, noting that she faces six months to three years in prison if convicted.
Mr Sothy added that the accused is the wife of a Por Senchey deputy district police chief, which made her arrest difficult.
According to a police report, Ms Thoeun created the saving group of 30 members in 2016, collecting about $20,000.
But when members attempted to contact her at the end of 2016 to access their savings, Ms Thoeun allegedly disappeared with the cash.
The group then filed a complaint with police, which led to the court issuing an arrest warrant on June 27.
