Prime Minister Hun Sen urged the Kingdom’s athletes to be well prepared for the 2023 SEA Games, which will be hosted by Cambodia, and to look for opportunities to promote the reputation of the country and its people.

Speaking during a dinner gathering with thousands of athletes from across the Kingdom yesterday, Mr. Hun Sen said the meeting was unprecedented in other ASEAN countries. He added that it was the responsibility of all athletes to carry the country.

“We all have to make an effort in order to move forward to a future. There are no politics in sport, so we hope that we all will unite with each other to make our country active and connect in solidarity with all kinds of sports in our country and others,” Mr. Hun Sen said.

Thorng Khon, President of the National Olympic Committee, said that when Cambodia hosts the SEA Games, its athletes must win 30 percent of all the competition’s 300 gold medals.

“Cambodia must find about 90 gold medals. This is our ambition,” he said.

Mr. Hun Sen also granted each of the 3,400 athletes who attended the dinner $25, spending $85,000 in total.
