Foreign Minister Hor Namhong met with South Korean Vice Foreign Affairs Minister Kim Hyoung-zhin at the ministry yesterday morning to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as a host of regional issues, according to ministry spokesman Cham Sounry.
Mr. Namhong and Mr. Hyoung-zhin also discussed plans for South Korean President Park Geun Hye to pay an official visit to Cambodia later this year, Mr. Sounry said.
“Ms.  Geun Hye will visit Cambodia within this year, but right now we don’t know the specific time,” he said.
The pair discussed what appeared to be a Cambodian ship caught by South Korean authorities transporting goods to North Korea in violation of United Nations Security Council regulations, which bans exports to the hermit state.
“His Excellency Hor Namhong said Cambodia is one of the UN members, therefore the Cambodian government also respects the UN’s resolutions and follows them with deep concern,” Mr. Sounry said. He added that North Korea has been singled out for its history of controversial nuclear weapons tests, which have caused heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula and throughout the world, and that Cambodia stood with ASEAN in objection to the tests. Cambodia is committed to the denuclearization of the peninsula, he said.
“The Cambodian Foreign Affairs Ministry previously issued a statement to object to North Korea’s nuclear tests. Cambodia also strongly calls on the North Korean government to fully respect the UN’s decision and urges North Korea to comply with all concerned parties in order to resolve tensions through peaceful negotiations,” Mr. Namhong said.
The South Korean delegate thanked Cambodia for acting as a mediator between the ASEAN community and South Korea from 2015 to 2018 during the meeting, Mr. Sounry reported.
“His Excellency Hyoung-zhin calls on Cambodia to continue its support of South Korea in order to strengthen bilateral ties between the ASEAN community and the Republic of Korea.”
Mr. Sounry also announced that South Korea is planning to open a new consulate office in Siem Reap in conjunction with an expected increase in tourism from the republic, as well as a rise in industrial and economic activity in Cambodia.
“His Excellency Hyoung-zhin said that the South has been preparing to open a new consulate, in March or April, in Siem Reap province,” he said.
