Storm Season on Horizon: Ministry

Mom Kunthear / Khmer Times Share:

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology issued a statement yesterday encouraging the Kingdom’s citizens to be cautious around lightning storms, which occur frequently between March and July.

The statement went on to say that today, Oddor Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Battambang, Pursat, Pailin, Koh Kong, Kep, Kampot and Preah Sihanouk could see lightning storms.

The ministry has been publishing Facebook posts with information on preventive safety measures in the event of lightning.

“There are more than 500 people who die and are injured due to lightning every year in Cambodia,” the posts read.

They also feature infographics depicting ‘lightning position,’ in which a person should squat with their knees touching while covering their ears, preferably away from bodies of water or open rice fields.

The ministry also requested citizens not to use their phones during thunderstorms, avoid riding motorbikes or bicycles and avoid sitting in tents or under trees.

According to a report by the National Committee for Disaster Management, 34 cases of lightning killed 107 people and injured 74 people throughout the Kingdom in 2015.
