Fifty-seven turtles, four pythons and two trucks were seized during the arrest of four men in Kampong Chhnang province on Saturday while they were allegedly transporting the protected animals for sale in Phnom Penh.
Captain Srey Sitha said that the trucks had been traveling from Banteay Meanchey province and the arrests had been a result of tips from undercover police.
“After receiving the lead from our undercover, we contacted the prosecutor to stop the two buses for a check,” he said.
The group of turtles, weighing over 47 kg, and the pythons will all be released by the NGO WildAid, Mr. Sitha said.
The group of suspects has claimed the animals did not belong to them. The forestry administration is handling their case, and if found guilty, each will face fines.
