Svay Rieng Provincial Court has temporarily detained Doung Sanet, a 43-year-old primary school teacher arrested on Saturday following a complaint about six months ago that he forced a male student to undress a female student in front of a class for failing to read a lesson.

The 11-year-old girl’s grandmother filed a complaint with police in late May after the child came home from Hun Sen Wat Thmey Primary School and told her what happened.

Investigating Judge Horm Mengse yesterday charged Mr. Sanet with indecent assault on a minor under the age of 15. The suspect is being held in a provincial prison in Svay Rieng until his trial.

“We inquired about him yesterday, and then ordered them to temporarily detain him in the provincial prison in Svay Rieng,” Judge Mengse said. “We do not yet know about how much money he will be fined and how many months or years he will be in prison.

We are waiting for the court verdict and we don’t know when the court will issue the verdict.”

Ros Salin, spokesman of Ministry of Education Youths and Sports, told Khmer Times that as soon as the ministry heard what happened they removed him from his teaching role.

“The Ministry of Education decided that he can only stand by as the regular staff or normal staff in the school. We have a moral code for all the teachers to follow,” Mr. Salin said. “We only suspended him. [Further action] will depend on the court verdict.”
