About 47 people died and another 100 were injured in traffic accidents over the Khmer New Year, a 25 percent drop compared to the same period last year, the report said.
According to the report of the National Police’s Traffic Police and Public Order Department yesterday, 91 traffic accidents happened across the country from April 13 to 17, killing 47 people and injuring 143 people, 94 of whom sustained serious injuries.
“The numbers of traffic accident decreased 30 times or 25 percent if compared to the same period in 2017 when 212 accidents occurred,” it said.
The report added that 55 people were killed and 226 were injured during Khmer New Year in 2017.
The main cause of traffic accidents included over-speeding, drunk driving, overtaking, sleepiness, and vehicle factor.
“Most traffic accidents happened in Phnom Penh, Svay Rieng province, Takeo, Kampong Cham, Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Thom, Prey Veng and Preah Vihear province,” it said.
