Two people on a motorbike were killed yesterday after being hit by a container truck, which was heavily laden with steel, in Phnom Penh’s Chbar Ampov district.
The accident took place yesterday afternoon on National Road 1 in Chbar Ampov district’s Prek Eng commune.
Bun Sok, a traffic police officer in Chbar Ampov district, said the couple had been riding a Honda motorbike along National Road 1 in Phnom Penh.
He added that while driving the motorbike, a container truck that was transporting steel and driving from the opposite direction, hit the motorbike, crushing the two victims and the motorbike and causing them to die instantly.
Mr Sok said the driver fled from the scene of the accident. “It was a terrible accident,” he said. “The truck crushed their bodies and heads and caused then to die terribly at the scene,” Mr Sok added. “The bodies were stuck under the truck.”
According to a police investigation, the accident was caused by the truck driver falling asleep at the wheel.
The bodies of the victims have been sent to a Buddhist temple in Prek Eng commune for funeral, Mr Sok said, adding that the identities of the victims were not revealed.
