Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire at an autoshop that left one woman dead yesterday morning in Prey Veng province.
A Prey Veng provincial police officer said the woman was alone when the fire broke out.
“The cause of the incident is still unknown and our officers are inspecting the scene and performing an autopsy on the victim,” he said. “We couldn’t rescue her because she was locked behind two doors inside and it took us a long time to break in.”
Ros Phoeun, deputy provincial police chief who is also in charge of the fire department, said the shop doubled as a house and contained highly flammable materials.
Mr Phoeun said the fire left the house almost completely destroyed in Prey Veng city.
“Right now, we are still investigating the cause of the fire,” Mr Phoeun said. “The victim died at the scene. It took four of our trucks to put out the fire.”
“The house was an auto repair shop and there were spare parts and petroleum,” Mr Phoeun added. “It took us an hour to completely put out the fire.”
According to a relative of the victim’s husband, the fire quickly spread while the victim was on the first floor.
“She was home alone while waiting for her family to come home,” the relative said. “We found her body on the first floor of the house.”
A funeral will be held soon, the relative added.
