Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen and Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi met in Vietnam on March 30, where they discussed their countries’ bilateral relationship and issues of region and international importance.
China announced its support of the Cambodian government in general and, in particular, its willingness to see Hun Sen re-elected.
Mr Hun Sen’s Facebook post of March 31 told of their meeting and that Mr Wang Yi told the premier that China agrees with all measures the Cambodia government has taken to protect and preserve peace, political stability, and esteem of the Kingdom.
As Khmer Times reported last year, China unwaveringly supports Cambodia in maintaining peace and political stability, and in resisting foreign intervention. It also finds the government’s dissolution of the CNRP and the arrest of Mr Sokha on treason charges as acceptable.
The Facebook post also noted Mr Wang Yi’s statement about China’s standing behind Hun Sen’s candidacy for prime minister in the next mandate. “Chinese leaders support Samdech Techo and wish that he be re-elected, to rule the country and bring about further development.”
