Provincial police seized a large quantity of liquid detergent from an unauthorized chemical manufacturer in Sihanoukville’s capital yesterday.

Deputy provincial police chief Sun Sophat said the owner of the illegal Bey village factory in Lek Mouy commune was issued a cease and desist letter in 2015, but had ignored the order and continued to produce unregulated detergent until yesterday’s police raid.

Three hundred liters of liquid detergent in addition to 10kg of chemicals used in its production were confiscated in the raid, Mr. Sophat said.

The factory owner, Kouch Cheng Hor, 53, sold the detergent to local people, especially those organizing weddings in need of bulk dish-cleaning supplies. The seized goods will be sent to the Ministry of Industry and Handicrafts in Phnom Penh for testing, to determine whether if it is safe for use.

“We cannot estimate the effects of those chemicals used to produce the detergent yet. We are waiting for the test results,” Mr. Sophat said.
