US Independence Day is on July 4, but the US Embassy in Phnom Penh hosted its official celebration at the Intercontinental Hotel on Thursday night. Almost 800 guests attended this year’s reception, including guest of honour Senior Minister in Charge of Special Projects Ly Thuch and many VIP guests from government, media and embassy staff based in Cambodia, NGOs and the private sector.

US Ambassador William A. Heidt’s message at the event related to economic ties expanding over the past year. The US remains the largest single destination for Cambodia’s exports and nearly 20 new factories have opened to produce goods for US consumers. Corporate giants General Electric and Coca-Cola are among the many US companies that made new investments here, tapping into a dynamic and growing market.

The program of the event started with a presentation of the colours by the US Embassy Marine Corps Detachment and the national anthems of Cambodia and the United States. Entertainment was provided by MC2 and American food and drinks, beer, pizza and doughnuts were served to guests during the event.
