Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged a military officer for falsifying documents, circulating counterfeit currency and illegal possession of a weapon.
Ly Vuth, a clerk at the court, identified the suspect as Brigadier General Loth Heng, 29.
Major Keo Savuth, deputy chief of the criminal investigation department with Russey Keo district police, said Brig Gen Heng and his personal assistant Captain Sorn Buntheng, 25, were arrested on Saturday while crossing a police checkpoint on National Road 5.
“After inspecting them, our police forces seized a pistol and a black package of counterfeit money,” he said.
After their arrests, police confiscated $1,080 in counterfeit money, Maj Savuth noted.
Mr Vuth said that Cap Buntheng has been released by the court after it determined he was not involved in any part of the crimes.
Maj Savuth addded that police also seized two military stars from Brig Gen Heng.
“He was a brigadier general, a military official, but he had two-star and three-star general disguises with him,” he said. “We suspect he wore these stars to be photographed and that the photos were hung in his rented house.”
Brig Gen Heng has been jailed pending his trial.
