A Cambodian working with his wife in Thailand allegedly murdered her by slitting her throat on Wednesday before trying to kill himself, police said yesterday.

Ly Vichetr, an immigration police officer at the Poipet International Border Checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey province, identified the victim as Ly Gechhuoy, 28, a clothes vendor in the Rong Kleu market in Sarak Keo province’s Aranya Pratheth district in Thailand.

Mr Vichetr said Meng Srun, 31, used a knife to slit her throat in the market after becoming enraged because she was speaking to another man.

Mr Vichetr said after the murder, the suspect attempted to commit suicide by swallowing pills but witnesses and emergency response services saved his life.

“According to witnesses, before the murder the husband and the wife got into an argument with each other because the husband accused the wife of betraying him,” said Mr Vichetr.

“He was jealous and was angry at her. He caught her and slit her throat with a knife, killing her instantly.”

Mr Vichetr said police brought the man to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Mr Vichetr said Ms Gechhuoy’s body had been taken to her home town in Banteay Meanchey province for her funeral.
