Cambodia’s involvement in the World Taekwondo Championships in South Korea is over following defeats yesterday for Cassie Nicole Tubbs and Chhun Sok Leng on the sixth day of competition.

Sok Leng was up first in the Men’s under-63kg round of 128 and put on a strong performance in the morning session to go through to the next round with a defeat of Singapore’s Jason Tan 20-11.

Sok Leng then watched from the sidelines as teammate Cassie Tubbs stepped on to the mat for her round of 64 bout against strong Brazilian Rafaela Araujo in the Women’s under-57kg category.

It was a difficult bout for USA-born Tubbs – she was shaded 1-2 and 4-5 in rounds 1 and 2 and was unable to claw herself back into contention in the third and final round as Araujo squeezed through 11-10.

Sok Leng returned to the mat in the afternoon session to face Croat Brecic Lovre in the round of 64.

Lovre faced to an eight-point lead after the first round advantage, claimed the second 9-3 and whitewashed his rival 7-0 in the third as the Cambodian suffered a 27-6 defeat.

Cambodia had sent a five-strong delegation to the games in the hope of gaining some much needed competition practice and preparation ahead of the impending August SEA Games in Malaysia.
