A deputy CNRP commune chief in Preah Sihanouk province was arrested on Tuesday and charged with persuading villagers to grab land illegally by the Kbal Chhay waterfall.

Prak Puthea, commune 1 police chief, identified the deputy commune chief as Chhay Rath and added that he was arrested based on a warrant issued by the provincial court.

“We went to arrest him while he was at the market on Tuesday,” he said. “The court charged him with persuading villagers to grab land illegally at Kbal Chhay waterfall, an area the government has deemed as conservation land.”

Mr Puthea said Mr Rath is now detained in the provincial prison.

Investigating Judge Plong Visal said the accused faces six months to two years in prison if convicted.

Provincial governor Yun Min said authorities have been keeping an eye on the area since the government issued a sub-decree marking it as protected land.

“If someone grabs land illegally, they will be arrested because it is a conservation area now,” he said.
