A farmer was killed in Oddar Meanchey province when an abandoned mortar round exploded as he was digging his rice field.

Provincial deputy police chief Puthy Ngok said the victim was Yinh Yoeu, 69, of Khtoum village. Mr Ngok said that after hearing the explosion, border soldiers and police stationed nearby went to the scene but Mr Yoeu was already dead.

Mr Yoeu’s body was taken home by his children for a funeral in the village.

The area, on the border with Thailand, was a frontline during fighting between Khmer Rouge and government troops in the 1980s.
