A former Cambodian ambassador to Laos was charged yesterday with cheating a real estate businessman out of more than $70,000.

Interior Ministry police officer Ly Sothy said ex-envoy Siri Odoum, 61, was now in the real estate business and living in Phnom Penh.

According to a police report,  Mr Odoum borrowed the money in 2015 from his friend Eab Pai to improve his property investments.

He promised to return the money in one year.

But on the deadline for repayment, he did not return the money as promised.

Instead, he tried to escape and could not be contacted for months.  Mr Pai filed lawsuit against him with the Phnom Penh Municipal Court last month.

Mr Sothy said court deputy prosecutor Ngin Pich charged Mr. Odoum yesterday with fraud, which carries a jail term of up to three years.

Mr. Odoum was detained on Saturday after ministry police issued a warrant for his arrest.
