A Cambodian Senator went on trial Friday, charged with posting on Facebook an altered version of the 1979 border treaty between Cambodia and Vietnam.
The Senator, Hong Sok Hour, had been jailed Aug. 15. He is charged with falsifying a public document, using a falsified document, and inciting chaos to social security. Under Cambodia’s penal code, he could face up to 17 years in jail if convicted.
On Friday, the opening of his trial drew dozens of protesters. Many said that Sen. Sok Hour, a member of the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party, should enjoy parliamentary immunity.
The trial resumes Wed. Oct. 7, at Phnom Penh Municipal Court.
