The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday convicted and sentenced a real estate businesswoman to 10 months imprisonment for cheating a colleague out of $228,000.

Trial Judge Im Vannak said Phath Sophavatey, 48, was also ordered to pay the $228,000 back to the plaintiff, her former colleague Yin Ramduol, 47.

According to court documents, Ms Sophavatey borrowed $228,000 from a bank using Ms Ramduol’s land title as a guarantee on the loan in 2016.

When Ms Ramduol attempted to access the loan and recoup her land title, Ms Sophavatey failed to comply and began ignoring her phone calls, the court heard.

After realising she had been cheated, Ms Ramduol filed a complaint in January 2017, leading to Ms Sophavatey’s arrest the following month.

Judge Vannak added yesterday that Ms Sophavatey was also fined $250.
